Featuring: Eileán Ní Chuilleanáin  and Neal Hall

Palazzo Firenze, Presso la ‘Loggia del Prima ciclo, Rome, Italy
Time: 4.30pm - 6.30pm;  3.27.2017
Eileán Ní Chuilleanáin:
An Irish poet, translator, and editor Eiléan Ní Chuilleanáin earned a BA and MA at University College Cork and also studied at Oxford University. Ní Chuilleanáin is described as " a truly imaginative poet, whose imagination is authoritative and transformative. She leads readers into altered or emptied landscapes. Each poem is a world complete, and often they move between worlds.  These are potent poems, with dense, captivating sound and a certain magic that proves not only to be believable but necessary, in fact, to our understanding of the world around us.
She is the author of numerous poetry collections, including Acts and Monuments (1966), which won the Patrick Kavanagh Award; The Magdalene Sermon(1989), which was selected as one of the three best poetry volumes of the year by the Irish Times/Aer Lingus Poetry Book Prize Committee; Selected Poems (2009); and The Sun-fish (2010), which won the International Griffin Poetry Prize. Her The Boys of Bluehill (2015) was shortlisted for the Forward Prize for Best Collection.  Ní Chuilleanáin’s work has been featured in several anthologies, including The Wake Forest Book of Irish Women's Poetry, 1967-2000 (1999, edited by Peggy O’Brien). Since 1975 she has edited the literary magazine Cyphers, and she has also edited Poetry Ireland Review. She has taught at Trinity College Dublin since 1966.
Neal Hall, M.D.Nealhallpoet.com
Neal Hall was formally trained as a medical-surgical eye physician and graduate of Cornell and Harvard Universities.  He is an internationally acclaimed poet.  Cornel West of the US, said of Dr. Hall “ [he] is a warrior of the spirit, a warrior of the mind, an activist, a poet. I sense Dr. Hall’s hypersensitivity to suffering – Martin, Malcolm and Jesus all had this hypersensitivity. Both sides of his soul have prophetic leanings. His poetry has the capacity to change ordinary people’s philosophy on social and racial issues.” Dr. Hall’s poetry speaks not just to the surface pain of injustice and inhumanity but deep into that pain, we label and package into genteel socio-political-economic-religious constructs to blur the common lines of cause, that is our shared story. A shared story that should unite us in a common struggle to be free. India’s Vasanth Kannabiran, Chairperson, Asmita Resource Centre for Women, remarked: ‘ This is poetry that scalds you into waking up to the possibility that you are perhaps one of those silent spectators. All in all he is a poet. And unquestionably one of the most significant voices of the century. ‘

Dr. Hall is an award-winning author of several books of poetry: Nigger For Life,  Winter’s A’ Coming StillWhere Do I Sit., Appalling Silence - selections of his work  translated into Telugu and Urdu and published in India. He has just completed his 5th book, Door of No ReturnHis work has been translated into 4 additional languages: Bengali, Kannada, German and Italian. It is currently being translated into Japanese.

Inception

Rhythm Divine Poets had its inception in December 2014 when Amit Shankar Saha, Anindita Bose and Sufia Khatoon started informally discussing in one-to-one conversation about forming a group to help creative people especially writers. Even though there was no activity initiated as a group there were individual efforts like poetry jamming in Sufia's Art Fair. This can be seen as the incubation period before the group was formally launched in March 2015.

Rhythm Divine Poets has successfully published the first volume of Rhythm Divine Poets Anthology which was launched at the Kolkata International Book Fair 2017.

The group strictly follows zero-tolerance policy towards plagiarism has been pioneering in wiping out the unethical practice through a systematic process of detection, show cause and decisive penal action. The group targets the act and does not persecute the individual. Steps are also taken to educate young poets about the difference between intertextuality, parody, pastiche and outright plagiarism.

The group believes in the policy of collective development by encouraging other poetry groups too and associating with them. The poets of the group, who are from all over the world, are not bound by constricting regulations and are free to participate in any other poetry group’s events. Rhythm Divine Poets group follows liberal policy and believes that poets are free individuals and cannot be governed by any corporate-like strictures.

In matters of ethics Rhythm Divine Poets have stood up time and again and shown exemplary character in resolving issues in the interest of poetry.

Birth and Vision

Our Birth and Vision
When three poets of Kolkata, Anindita Bose, Sufia Khatoon and Amit Shankar Saha, met on 12 March 2015, there arose the vision of forming a Whatsapp group of poets who will share their poetic creation and get inspired by each other. With such a vision was formed “Rhythm Divine Poets”, the Whatsapp group and followed by “Rhythm Divine… a poet’s poetic journey”, the Facebook page. Sufia Khatoon, an avid social worker, painter and art curator, has involved poetry reading as part of her Art Fair even before the foundation of Rhythm Divine Poets group. So it was quite natural that after the foundation of the group such activities got an added impetus.

Rhythm Divine Poets group share their craft together over various fields both real and virtual. They have an intention to serve poetry as a form of art as well as to use poetry for philanthropic purposes. Rhythm Divine Poets group intends to use poetry as a therapy and in that direction they have visited old age homes to spread the effects of poetry. According to Anindita Bose, who is a faculty at Princeton Review, Rhythm Divine Poets group was started with the intention of sharing poetry on a daily basis, especially among poets and poetry lovers. Soon it grew and we had poets from USA, Germany, Hyderabad, Delhi, Mumbai, Bangalore and various other places joining in and sharing their work. Dr. Amit Shankar Saha, an a professor in the Department of English at Seacom Skills University, who likes to run things quietly in Rhythm Divine Poets group, is all excited about poetry doing so well. He says that anyone who is passionate about poetry will love to be here and just focus on writing poems and improve their skills by reading other poets’ works also.

Long before the advent of any poetry group in Kolkata (except some niche ones) there was Sufia’s Art Fair, where used to be poetic jamming sessions. This biannual event was the haunt of the then upcoming poets. Poets used to look forward to this event to recite their poems in front of an audience. It was also an amalgamation of art, craft, music and poetry. It was long before cafe poetry came into vogue. It was long before poetry became a thing for publicity. The Art Fair organized by Sufia Khatoon was where city poets met and recited their poems and soon it became the breeding ground for ideas that eventually led to the formation of poetry groups and the hosting of poetry events exclusively.

The Rhythm Divine Poets group founders have tirelessly nurtured poetic talents by encouraging poets, giving them a platform to display their creativity, organizing poetry workshops and online contests, taking poetry on air, incorporating journals and magazines within their fold as avenues for poetry publication, hosting events at both local and international levels and bringing poetry to the center of a poet’s life from the periphery of panel discussions. They have done so without any financial support or sponsorship and living life daily in defiance of their family, not conforming to social pressures and giving poetry a place of preeminence in their lives. They have tried to bring other poetry groups together so that there is bonhomie along with a healthy competition, which is a recipe for excellence, rather than creating a monopoly, which breeds mediocrity. They believe that poets are the guests at any poetry event and poets cannot be dictated by subsidiary associates. They believe that poets are humble people but not spineless people. They believe that poetry should unite and create harmony rather than divide and discriminate for some extraneous gains. They believe that there would not have been intolerance and extremism if there was poetry in the lives of the people.

It is not surprising that poetry came first when the beachcombers started speaking. The earliest speech made by human beings was poetry not prose for speech was a mnemonic device and rhyme and rhythm were the aids to memory. No doubt from Rig Veda to Gilgamesh to Iliad and Odyssey are all verses. All ancient religious texts adhere to poetry and it is its lack that gives birth to disharmony. That is why poets are not ordinary beings. They stoop to live ordinarily out of humility. Poetry teaches us to be courteous and humble and still stand one’s ground. Moreover poetry gives pleasure, the material pursuit of which has been the thrust of a capitalist society leading to decadence without realizing the better alternative that poetry provides.

Yellow of Summer

Tread lightly least you
crush the yellow of summer
under your hasty steps,
If you were the leaf and I was
your leap of faith,
a curious hand would
have caught ourcurious fall.

Fingers reconcile with
old tales of blood bonds again,
One hurt, the other mourns in vain.
A child laughs at our childish fights,
an old hand, you seem
to hold when a boy has died.
An old clock starts ticking,
somewhere in a cultured home
where strangers meet.

I still look for your laughter
when eyes fall out of life.
Maybe someday we can
find the lost spring flowers under the trees,
running to catch them alive.
And you were right to say once,
We should live in the yellow of summer.

Anindita Bose

A Good Play

A play in darkness sparkling episodes of life
momentum created to walk together
in stream of consciousness with words and gestures
echoing truths wrapped in patterns
hopelessly witnessing a surreal reaction of
nerves, tissues, muscles and multiple organs
a need to connect a wish to reach out yet failing to curb barriers
created since nascent ages.
Who will believe in ideas that you show
unless an attachment grows?
Words are mere shadows that fade out
after moments of meetings.

Blue Door, Mosaic Floor

Nostalgia lays an egg
beside the blue door,
a music roams in
through the gap of our grin.

We run, slip and fall
on the mosaic floor,
break our front teeth,
see how memory bleeds.
